Classical Society Quiz

After school on the 26 September, Mrs Baker held the annual Classical Society Quiz.

Six teams, each consisting of four to five members from a range of age groups, took

part in this friendly competition.

Before the quiz began, we were given a chance to convene in our groups and eat some

cake, allowing us to take on the challenge with filled stomachs. Soon after, we took on a

variety of questions of a classical nature in four separate, heated rounds. The first round

was hosted by Mrs Carter, who asked us challenging questions about the classical roots

of biology and some Latin-based adjectives connected with various groups of animals.

Mrs Baker was the question master for the other three rounds:“gods and heroes”, the

picture round and “who am I?” After tireless efforts from all teams, our excellent scorer

Mrs Burnside revealed that Team 6, Alice Layzell-Smith, Anjali Tohani, Berfin Laursen

and Jude Dannawi) had been victorious by half a mark. Not only was this quiz a great

opportunity to get us thinking and show our Classical knowledge on a competitive

level, but it was also an occasion to interact and socialise with new people.

Beekeeping Club

When I heard about a beekeeping club coming to Bancroft’s

I was very surprised but it was always something that had

interested me so I decided to give it a go. I was expecting it to

involve a lot of classroom work and learning about beekeeping

but to my surprise we were allowed to go almost straight to the

apiary (after the necessary warnings of course) where we were

able to get some hands on experience.

The thing that amazed me most about the bees is how calm they

are. They are often portrayed as black and yellow striped balls of

rage but this simply isn’t the case (though still fairly accurate for

wasps). They will just fly around and have a look at what’s going

on. It is a nice change from what is so common in lessons to be

actively doing an activity and learning about it practically. I can

confidently say that I’ve learnt more about bees in the last couple

of weeks than the rest of my life put together.

Altogether I would highly recommend beekeeping to anyone

who is curious about it. It has been very enjoyable for everyone

involved and I look forward to continuing it in the future.
